I made my travel plan to stay a month in Napier hoping to practice with Peter Sanson at his yoga studio (website). I was attracted by many good words/articles from students about the teacher, Peter, as wellas the affordable cost ($12/class).
I arrived Napier only to realise he was away to Europe from April to August for workshop. I was sad with the news but nothing I could do about it, it was my bad that I did not visit his website after I booked my tickets in January. In the website, it was mentioned that when Peter is away, his assistant will be there to help. So I went.
I met Meidi in my first, third and forth class (Mysore class is available on every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday; Tuesday is for beginner course, and Friday is Half Led Primary). She was helpful and assisted me a lot in my practice. She kept asking me to relax, and let go the tension I held for each asana. I know it has been my problem when I practice, my body is so tensed and there are too much tension on my shoulders, and my neck. Meidi was observant to notice it and reminded me throughout my practice. I was grateful for that.
I have little experience practicing in mysore class, many that I learned is by watching the old video clips from youtube (I am very thankful to the people who produced and uploaded these wonderful videos, it lets people who cannot afford to pay high cost to attend mysore classes like me to be able to still practice it on our own). Adding to the 3 classes I attended when I was visiting Australia at Ashtanga Yoga Moves, by Eileen Hall (I wrote about it here), I only attended 6 mysore classes, I still have many to learn. I was exploring a lot about the primary series and intermediate series. I wanted to try the first 1 and 2 poses from intermediate series, so I tried Pasasana after Urdhva Dhanurasana. Meidi spotted it and told me Urdhva Dhaurasana should be the last to practice, so Pasasana should be done after Setu Bandhasana. Meidi also helped me with my drop-back wheel pose.
I am glad that even I could not practice with Peter this time, I still learned things and found some answers for my practice with Meidi. I believe we just need to attend each class with open heart and mind, we will find new things to explore in our practice, no matter who the teacher is.
I hope I would make chance to visit to this city again so that I can deepen my practice with Peter and Meidi in future.
