For the last 2 years during the month of June, I had been joining celebrations held by yoga studios and organisations and had so much fun. As a new teacher who just started teaching this year, I did not have much plan to hold any event and most of all I did not expect I would have much students who wants to join the event even if I would hold it. A friend, also a yoga teacher suggested to hold a big event in a shopping mall, she has got a free space which I could make use to make event, I was holding back on that idea, mostly because I was not confident if I could handle to host a big event like that. A lot of work has to be done and I do not see myself someone who could bring up the celebrating environment when I face a big crowd of people. So I decided to go with my heart and said ‘no’ to the generous offer from my friend about the space. But I really wanted to do something for Yoga Day, and I wanted to do it at my style and with my comfortable level. So I decided to hold 4 free classes during Yoga Day for anyone, existing students as well as anyone who is interested. I decided to also have a small eating and chatting session after the classes.
I know it is different from how yoga studios holding the celebration, most of the time we see people celebrate by doing yoga in a big group, in an opened area, loud. But a small group, indoor, quiet regular practice can be a different celebration too.
On the event day, we had our regular practice and we spent some time to eat and chat. I felt I built more connection with the students now. It was a good chance to understand the students more and to let them know more about me.
Overall, I still could not believe I started teaching Yoga this year and I had hold a Yoga event to celebrate International Day of Yoga this year. It was such an awesome experience though I was rather tired after teaching the 4 classes and the food preparation. It was all worthy when I realised I could literally do something for the community in my way and ability.
I would hope to do it again next year if I could.
